Police, Local councilors in Luwero Clash over Night Curfew

The Chairman LC 3 of Katikamu sub county says that every night they record over 15 cases of crimes that include burglary, thefty, rape, defilement, and robbery.

 A curfew that was imposed by the local authorities in Luwero district has become a bone of contention between the LC councilors and the police.

More than 30 LC 1 chairmen in Katikamu Sub County, Luweero district headed by the LC 3 Chairman, Sam Sserunjogi, imposed a curfew restricting people from moving at night after 10:00pm. The curfew was intended to control the rising wave of night crime activity.

The Chairman LC 3 of Katikamu sub county says that every night they record over 15 cases of crimes that include burglary, thefty, rape, defilement, and robbery.

But the residents have described the curfew as an infringement on their right to move and unacceptable.

Pascal Mukiibi a resident of Lukomera trading center, said on Wednesday that the curfew was interfering with businesses especially bar owners, whose businesses peak at night.

But before the people’s voices could heard, the police has raised more dust in the matter.

Police have outlawed the night curfew and warned LC chairmen not to attempt to implement it.

The Central-East region police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, saide on Tuesday that the LC 1 bosses have no mandate to pass a night curfew in their area.
