Banana vendors in Itendero Kabwohe town council in Sheema district are protesting a proposal by the town council authorities to evict them from the road reserves. Last week, David Batega, the town clerk Itendero town council issued the banana vendors an eviction notice to pave way for the beautification of the town.
He asked the vendors to vacate the road reserve within a space of one week or risk forceful eviction. In his letter Batega also accused the vendors of blocking trafficking and littering the town council. However, his letter has not gone down well with the vendors who are accusing the officials of harassment.
Patrick Nuwagaba, chairman Itendero Banana Vendors Association they are not ready to leave unless the town council gives them a suitable alternative place to operate from. Nuwagaba says that many vendors are worried of losing out on business if they are not allocated a suitable place.
He says that the market where the council wants to move them has no access road for trucks, which come all the way from Kampala to buy their merchandise. George Tumwebaze, the LC III chairman Kabwohe Itendero town council says all they are trying to do is to organize the town. Tumwebaze says vendors are risk of being knocked dead by the speeding vehicles since many display their matooke along the busy Mbarara -Kasese highway.
