Police has restored calm in Kyarubambura village in Rugaga sub county Isingiro district following running battles with residents over the disappearance of one Muhumuza Deus, a resident of the area.
Muhumuza reportedly went missing last week and police recovered his body today in a swamp. Poly Namaye, the south-western police publicist says the body of Muhumuza was recovered in Rugaga swamp following an overnight search. The body has been taken for postmortem to establish the actual cause of death.
On Sunday, angry residents invaded the home of Mohamed Kakubagane, a prominent farmer in the area and destroyed his plantations. They also hacked his 20 Friesian cows and wanted to lynch him, accusing him of being behind the disappearance of Muhumuza. Kakubagane ran away and is still in hiding.
Muhumuza and Kakubagane have reportedly been having a long dispute over land.
Namaye says the situation has now been brought to control after police intervention. She notes that even though no one has been arrested in the act of lawlessness, a few residents have been asked to record statements with the police.
No one has been arrested yet in connection with the death.
