Recruitment of officer cardets for Uganda People’s Defense Forces in Mbale, has been shrouded by influence peddling. Some pitched camp at the recruitment center in cricket ground and passed small chits of papers bearing names directly to the recruitment team.
At one moment, Col. Francis Chemo, the officer in charge of the exercise got infuriated and chased away a candidate who had smuggled his academic papers to the verification team. The candidate had earlier been rejected.
Chemo from time to time kept reprimanding members of the recruitment team against smuggling in unqualified people.
But some of the recruits that made it to the recruitment list had failed the physical fitness excercises, a key requirement for recruitment into the army.
One female candidate who was escorted to the recruitment center by her father was turned away at the last minute because she allegedly has a flat foot.
Capt. Deo Akiiki the Third Division Army Spokesperson says that many of the recruits failed because they were physically unfit.
