The Uganda Red Cross Society has declared Bududa a disaster area after landslides injured eight people and left 420 others homeless.
The landslides early on Thursday struck Simuyu village in Bulucheke Sub County, along the slopes of Mt. Elgon during a heavy downpour.
Now the Uganda Red Cross Society is calling for urgent humanitarian support for the victims.
Stephen Wamakota, the Mbale Branch Manager says the assessment they have carried out in the area indicates it’s a disaster because of the large number of people affected. Wamakota says the displaced people, who have taken refuge in the relatives’ homes, are currently in dire need of food and non food items like blankets.

The incident follows a similar one in Kaabong district, where seven people were killed and two others injured by a mudslide on Tuesday night.
This is the second time Bududa is struck by landslides. In March 2010, the slides buried an entire village killing over 300 people. Government eventually relocated the survivors to Kiryandongo district after experts warned of more disaster on the slopes of Mount Elgon.
