Police in Kalungu district are holding a 32-year old man for allegedly spearing his young brother to death. The incident occurred at Buseke village Nabutogwa parish in Kalungu District.
The suspect, identified as Steven Walugembe allegedly stubbed his brother, Godfrey Katerega, 30, over family property. Katerega was reportedly stabbed through the left ribs and bled to death.
Residents say the two brothers have always had bitter arguments over ownership of the family property.
Noreen Zalwango, the deceased’s sister said Katerega’s pleas for help attracted their attention. She added that all efforts to save his life were futile.
She explained that their late father, Joseph Mawanda did not divide the land amongst the children, which prompted Kateregga and Walugembe to fight for it.
Simon Etyang, the OC CID Kalungu police says they arrived on time to rescue Walugembe from angry residents, who wanted to lynch him.
Etyang explains that the deceased had visited his late father’s home where a dispute over land developed among them. Etyang further notes that while there, Katerega entered the house without knowing that his brother, Walugembe had waited for him with a spear.
He says the postmortem report shows that Katerega lost too much blood, which caused his death. His body was given to the relatives for burial as investigations into the matter continue.
