Heavy rains across Karamoja have hampered efforts by the office of the prime minister to relocate hundreds of residents, who were affected by last week’s landslides in Kabong district.
On Tuesday last week, mudslides killed at least seven people and hundreds more were displaced.
James Fred Okello, the Kabong District Chief Administrative Officer says the relocation exercise that was scheduled to start on Monday this week, has been pushed to Thursday.
He attributes the delay to the heavy rains, which has made it impossible for the victims to construct their structures for accommodation at the new sites on flat lying areas in Kawalakol Sub County.
Okello says a team from the office of the Minster for Karamoja Region, who were on Monday scheduled to visit the victims, were advised to stay away because of the impassable roads. The displaced people are temporarily taking refuge at Kanakomol primary school in Mourolem village, Kawalakol Sub County.
Okello, who told Uganda Radio Network that he was in the Prime Minister’s office to process the relocation exercise, said the PM’s office has allocated six hydroform machines to the victims for making bricks for construction at the new site.
Residents living in 23 villages on the slopes of Kabong hill, who are at risk following the last Tuesday’s incident, are to be relocated to a safer flat area.
