Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has backed a decision by Kasubi market vendors to relocate a primary school for the construction of the new market.
The school up for relocation is Nakyekoledde Church of Uganda Primary School.
In a joint meeting attended by Lukwago, Lubaga division mayor Joyce Nabbossa Ssebugwawo and a team of city councilors at Kasubi market on Thursday evening, the vendors demanded for the relocation of the school in favor of a new market.
Kampala Capital City Authority has received a loan of 2.6 million US dollars from the African Development Bank for the construction of Kasubi market.
Lukwago says all along KCCA has been looking for land for the construction of the new market. He explains that among the land lords who have declared intention to offer land to KCCA includes the Family of Nakyekoledde, who own the majority shares in Nakyekoledde Church of Uganda Primary School.
The other options are Namungoona along the Northern Bypass and on Kimera road that links to Nabweru. Lukwago says the vendors’ proposal cannot be taken lightly.

Lukwago said the construction of Kasubi market would enable proper planning of the area.

Rubaga mayor, Joyce Ssebugwawo said the vendors had earlier thought of having part of the Kasubi royal land offered for the construction of the market but that the royal family objected.
Godfrey Asiimwe, the area KCCA councilor says that the pupils of Nakyekoledde primary school, which is under the Universal Primary Education program, can easily find alternative places in the nearby schools.

Hadijah Nanyonjo, one of the vendors says she has been selling along the roadsides from 1986. Margret Namirimu, another vendor says that the construction of the market shall enable the vendors to acquire permanent and safe work places.
