The Bishop of Mityana Anglican diocese, Dr Stephen Samuel Kazimba has asked leaders in the four districts of Mityana, Mubende Kiboga and Kyankwanzi to support the anti-Mabira give away campaign.
The bishop made the call on Sunday while presiding over the confirmation of 64 children at Bamusuta Church of Uganda in Kiboga town.
Bishop Kazimba said that giving away Mabira forest for sugar cane growing presents total deviation by government from its commitment to promote and conserve the environment.
Government plans to give away 7100 hectares of the forest to SCOUL in a move to address sugar shortage in the country.
But Bishop Kazimba explained that the political leaders from his diocese should join hands with other leaders in the country to convince President Yoweri Museveni to accept alternative places so far offered in different parts of the country for cane growing.
He says the eco-system of natural forests in the country should remain intact if the diverse effects of climate change such as drought are to be avoided.
Kazimba however warns Ugandans against resorting to violent means to avoid shedding blood and disrupting peace in the country.
The prelate maintains that dialogue should be prioritized in the bid to harmonize the issue of Mabira, warning politicians against inciting the public into violence.
