Striking members of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) are meeting the University council in a bid to end the strike over salary increment.
Dr. Tanga, Odoi, the MUASA chairperson in a telephone interview with Uganda Radio Network confirmed that they are locked up in a meeting at the University but declined to comment further saying the outcome will be communicated later.
The lecturers want the University council and government to resolve the long standing wrangle over 16 billion shillings owed to them by the National Insurance Corporation. They are also demanding a 100 percent salary increment.
The strike, which begun on Tuesday morning, has affected activities at Makerere as the new academic year begins. Students were seen stranded at the lecture rooms, which were open but with no lecturers. Some utilized the confusion to mingle around and also process their registration.
Grace Turyagumanawe, the Kampala Metropolitan police commander was briefly at the University to meet officials over fears of a likely strike by students.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Jessica Alupo says the government is taking some steps aimed at ensuring that the lecturers return to work. She says her ministry met the Makerere University governing council this morning and reached an understanding, which is to be communicated to Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi.
The Governing council together with education ministry officials were due to meet the Prime Minister by the time of filing this report.
