News
Two people are confirmed dead and seven others critically injured after two Kinyara sugar factory trucks collided on Wednesday morning.
Two people are confirmed dead and seven others critically injured after two trucks belonging to Kinyara sugar factory collided on Wednesday morning.

The accident at Binamira village in the Kinyara sugar plantation occured at about 6am, the Masindi District police commander, Juma Okung has said.

Okung says a Mercedes Benz truck registration number UAE 634Y collided with a Fuso lorry number UAM 610Y. The vehicles were transporting cane cutters and weediers to work at the time of the accident.

Okung identifies the deceased as Rose Anderu, a cane Weedier and a 15 year old girl, Gloria Ajokia. The DPC says police are investigating the particulars of the juvenile to ascertain whether she was also a casual laborer in the factory. The bodies lie at Masindi hospital mortuary.

The two died on the spot while the seven injured victims were rushed to the factory hospital.

Anthony Emojong, the Masindi district traffic officer who rushed to the scene, says the accident occurred when the two vehicles were trying to by-pass each other in the narrow sugar plantation roads.

According to Emojong, although the drivers had avoided a head on collision the vehicles caught up on each others trailers and the people affected had part of their bodies outside.

Emojong says police are still investigating the cause of the accident although he does not rule out reckless driving.

Drivers of both trucks escaped after the accident and the vehicles have been towed away to Masindi police station.

The police say this is one of the many accidents registered in the sugar plantation due to the narrowness of the roads coupled with reckless driving.
