Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has broken out in Sanga Sub County in Kiruhura sending farmers and leaders in the district rushing into panic.
The Kiruhura District Veterinary Officer, Dr Francis Mugisha says that they had embarked on vaccinating cattle in the sub county.
The ministry of agriculture, animal industry and fisheries has now imposed a quarantine to prevent further spread of the FMD to other areas.
Bright Rwamirama the animal industry minister says FMD has not been reported anywhere else in Ankole cattle corridor in the recent months and they are investigating the source.
The affected farmers blame the disease outbreak on people who transport animals illegally from the area across the Tanzanian markets.
Rwankole Kojo, a farmer in Sanga says he suspects the FMD that has claimed 5 of his cattle so far to have come from Tanzania.
FMD hit the cattle corridor for four years ago leading to closure of livestock markets and restriction on movement of livestock and their products until it was fully eradicated in 2010.
