Wholesale sugar dealers in Jinja on Monday morning went on strike at Kakira Sugar Works after they found the sugar prices to have been increased without their knowledge.

Over 300 wholesalers are protesting the factory price for a 50 kilogram bag of sugar, which has been raised from 170,000 to 230,000 shillings at Kakira sugar works’ offices.

Jafaru Kipoola, one of the traders says this will force them to increase the price of sugar which will not be affordable to most people on the market.

He says he has already paid for 200 bags of sugar and sees no reason why Kakira sugar works should increase the price suddenly.

Now the sugar dealers are camped around the sugar offices and have vowed not to move away until they are given the commodity at the right price.

Ben Byabagaba, Kakira sugar works sales manager is attending a closed door crisis meeting with other managers at the sugar factory.

S K Ayengar, Kakira sugar works company secretary says, however that he has not been informed about any price increase.
