Over 1000 residents in six sub counties of Yumbe district have been left homeless after their homes were washed away by floods.
The floods followed a heavy down pour on Saturday and Sunday destroying over 100 grass thatched houses in Midigo Sub County and parts of Ariwa Sub County.
Other sub counties where the floods washed away crops in the gardens and cut off road networks include Kerwa, Kochi, Kululu, and Drajini. Social services such as education and health have been affected.
Neria Bileru, one of the people whose houses have been washed away by the heavy floods says they have not been able to get food. Neria, a mother of six says all the food stock in the house was taken away by the floods leaving them helpless.
She says much as they have been accommodated at the nearby school, their presence has disorganized operations of the school. She appeals to good Samaritans to intervene and help them with food.
Anthony Oluko, the LC 3 chairperson of Midigo Sub County says many of the displaced residents are now camped in schools and churches but they have nothing to eat. He is worried that if humanitarian organizations fail to intervene to offer help to the displaced, more problems such as out break of diseases could follow anytime because the conditions under which the displaced people are staying are deplorable.
Oluko appeals to the district disaster preparedness committee to take up the matter.
But when contacted, Yassin Taban, Yumbe district LC 5 chairman said the disaster caught the district off guard because there has been no budget to address such emergencies. He says the district is already aware about the problem and they have informed the ministry of disaster preparedness and humanitarian organization to come and help the displaced people before diseases such as cholera break out in the affected areas.
This is the first time floods have washed away homes and displaced people in Yumbe since the rains started in June this year.
