Over 30 families in Pida A village Butiaba sub-county in the oil-rich Buliisa district are homeless after the area was submerged by floods.
Residents say the floods have been triggered by the heavy rains received in the area for the last two weeks.
Pida A village is part of Butiaba landing site on Lake Albert and has a population of over 6000 people.
Victims have now taken refugee at their neighbors and relatives who are not yet affected, although uncertain of the future as all their valuable property was washed away.
Beatrice Ngamito, one of the victims now lives at her sister’s home after she was displaced by the floods two weeks ago. Ngamito, a mother of three says her house got submerged in the night. She lost all her valuable property including the 300 kilograms of fish she had bought for business.
Abdul Nuru, another resident was on Tuesday struggling to protect his children from floods that cut off his compound. He says he cannot go for work.
A part from the eminent starvation and hunger, sanitation related diseases like cholera could be on their way as all the latrines have been submerged.
Residents have now been left with no option but to ease themselves in the flooded area.
Butiaba lies in the flat land of the western rift valley. Running rain water down the escarpment collects in the flat terrain resulting into floods.
Area leaders say this is the worst flooding they have witnessed in recent years. Seremoth Mulimba, the Butiaba sub county chairman says although some flooding has been experienced during heavy rains, this is the worst ever.
Mulimba is worried that the whole village could get submerged if the rains continue.
He says the problem is beyond the locals’ capacity to control saying he has notified the district authorities for intervention.
Neither the district chairman nor the RDC could be reached for their take on the matter as none of them could pick their calls.
Heavy rains received through out the country have caused flooding and landslides, washed away bridges and rendered roads impassable in some areas.
