News
Government has bowed to pressure from Karamoja Members of Parliament and dispatched a team of engineers to salvage the road network in the region.
Government has bowed to pressure from Karamoja Members of Parliament and dispatched a team of engineers to salvage the road network in the region.

This follows threats from the legislators last week to mobilize support against the government if it fails to rescue the region from the worsening road conditions.

The MPs were concerned that government is reluctant yet several bridges and culverts connecting major routes in Karamoja to other parts of the country have all been swept away or submerged by heavy rains and floods.

Musa Ecweru, the State Minister for relief and disaster preparedness on Wednesday told Uganda Radio Network that government sent a team from Kampala to boost the engineers from Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) in Karamoja region.

Ecweru says they are expected to ensure that all the major roads that have been cut off in Karamoja region are rehabilitated as soon as possible.

Dan Alinange, the UNRA public relations officer says the team has started work on the Kaabong Bridge. He said they have started constructing an emergency bridge as they mobilize for funds to put a permanent bridge.

He said they expect work on Kaabong Bridge to be completed within six weeks.

Kaabong Bridge was washed away by heavy rains three weeks ago, cutting off traffic between Kaabong and Kitgum districts as well as the Republic of South Sudan.

Alinange said after the Kaabong Bridge they expect to repair the broken Moroto Bridge, which has cut off Moroto from neighboring districts. He noted that the team will there after embark on the rehabilitation of culverts which have been submerged by water.

Rose Lilly Akello, Kaabong district Woman MP warned the engineers against shoddy work, adding that they will institute a committee as members of parliament from the region to monitor the work.

Karamoja region have suffered from floods as a result of the torrential rain that started early in May.
