Andrew Muyanja, a cop attached to Kiwoko police station in Nakaseke district has narrowly escaped lynching for knocking a cyclist. Muyanja was rescued from the wrath of an angry mob by anti riot police after knocking down a cyclist Sulait Bbaale. Muhamadi Mulumba, an eye witness says that trouble for Muyanja collided with Bbale while riding a police motorcycle of registration number UP 2845 at Wesige Mukama Street in Luweero town council.
He says that after knocking down Bbale, Muyanja tried to flee the scene. He says that as a result, angry motorists, cyclists and residents chased the unarmed police officer on foot and apprehended him at Kasoma maize mill. The residents threatened to lynch the cop for reckless riding and running without helping the accident victim.
Anti riot police swung into action and whisked away Muyanja under tight security. Police left Sulait Bbaale lying on the ground unconscious and drove off drawing massive protests from residents. Residents picked up Bbale and rushed him to Bishop Caesar Asili memorial health center for treatment.
Cyclists and motorists have threatened to strike should police fail to look after Bbale and prosecute Muyanja. Samuel Bamuzibire, Luweero District Police Commander blames residents for taking the law into their own hands. Bamuzibire says Muyanja has been detained for riding recklessly and injuring a person.
