More than 700 pupils of Tunyi Primary School in Bulambuli district are at the risk of being buried by the mudslides. Tunyi primary school is located about 800 meters away from a deep crack that has developed on the mountain.

The crack which is more than a kilometer long is causing panic among villagers who live on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Sisiyi Sub-county. The crack developed following torrential rain falls that have pounded the area for weeks.

Nabende Wamoto. Bulambuli Resident District Commissioner says a team of experts from the office of the prime minister have visited the school to assess the threats. Nabende says the team which has spent a week in the area analyzing the threats is due to come up with a report on the dangers that the cracks are posing on the environment in the affected area.

He says so far the experts have advised that the mudslides will most likely affect the opposite side of the school if the cliff breaks off. He says lack of logistics is hindering the relocation of pupils to a safer place to study in.
