Two teachers died on Thursday morning in a road accident near Kisaasi round about on the Northern By-Pass.
Justin Opio, the head teacher of Kyengera parents and Mark Othieno, a head teacher at Fair primary school in Kireka died on the spot, after they were knocked by a hit and run vehicle.
Vincent Sekate, the Deputy Police spokesperson, said the teachers were riding on a Motorcycle -a Bajaj boxer, at 6:00am when they were knocked down by a speeding vehicle.
It’s not yet clear where the teachers were coming from or where they were heading to when the targic accident occured. Police was called to the scene and took their bodies to the City mortuary. Police also recovered a driving permit of a one Mark Othieno, believed to have been riding the motorcycle when the accident occurred.
Last year 2,954 people died in road accidents out of the 22461 accidents recorded in the country.
Careless driving was the most common single cause of fatal and serious injuries accounting for 45.5percent of all accidents, followed by reckless driving at 29.3percent while hit and run accidents accounted for 9.5percent.
According to the annual traffic statistics, most of the accidents occur during day time especially at about 5pm because of heavy traffic flow on the roads at that time. The lowest number of accidents occurs between mid night and 4am when there is less traffic on the road.
