There is tension at Namasagali University in Kamuli after students attempted to stage a strike in protest against what they referred to as negligence by the administrators.
On Monday morning, over 200 students refused to attend lectures and threatened to turn violent by blocking the road to the campus with tree logs and stones.
They say the university has not had electricity and water supply for over two weeks and there is no explanation for the anomaly. The students add that when they ask the dean of students, John Muyita to fuel the school generator, he dodges them.
Kamuli district police commander, Musa Nabende confirmed that police swung into action immediately to calm the rowdy students and a crisis meeting is ongoing to address the situation.
Nabende says police will remain at the university campus until the students’ grievances are answered to ensure that no violence breaks out later.
Namasagali University, which started as a private institution, is currently a subsidiary of Busitema University, the only public university in Eastern Uganda.
