Uganda Peoples Defense Forces have recruited up to three hundred fifty people from Kasese district to be trained for the Local Defense Unit (LDU) role.
Hundreds of candidates including men and women on Friday thronged the Kasese Boma Grounds to try their lack to join the force but only 350 of them were successful.
Kasese is one of the districts neighboring the Democratic Republic of Congo which are supposed to produce two thousand LDUs.
The 305 brigade spokesperson, Lt. Ninsiima Rwemijuma told reporters that hundreds more have been recruited in Bundibugyo, Ntoroko, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo and Kabarole districts.
Lt. Rwemijuma however dismissed suggestions that the recruitment is as a result of the recent reports that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels were regrouping in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rebels invaded Uganda in 1996 before engaging in a five year brutal war until their defeat in 2002.
Lt. Rwemijuma said that the UPDF is aware of the ADF remnants still in the DR Congo adding that the force is ready for any challenge.
There was drama at the Boma Grounds when an unidentified woman stormed the recruitment room demanding for her husband who had been recruited.
But the officers in charge did not grant the woman a chance to access her husband before she was taken to the DISO’s office for counseling.
