President Museveni has disowned Basajjabalaba’s claims that he Okayed a 142 billion shillings compensation, for the loss of the city tycoon’s contracts to manage the markets in the city.
A press statement issued by the State House department of press and public relations quotes the Head, Legal Department of State House, Joy Kabatsi saying President objected to Bassajabalaba’s acquisition of markets owned by Kampala City Council and by any other Municipal Councils, where many people were doing their businesses.
Kabatsi says the President instead worked to get Basajjabalaba out of Nakasero Market, Shauriyako market and St. Balikuddembe (Owino) market. She noted that according to President Museveni, there has never been a Central Government policy to allow individuals to usurp the markets that were being used by many people.
Based on the premise that Basajjabalaba was acting in complete ignorance of the legitimate interests of the many, The President advised many times that he should be compensated by the legitimate or competent bodies, the statement adds.
Kabatsi however says that the President never mentioned a figure, either by word or in writing as a basis for Basajjabalaba’s compensation.
Kabatsi says that State House is looking into forgeries of its documents, perpetuated by some crooks.
