Nakivale refugee settlement camp in Isingiro district has been hit by food shortage following delays by aid agencies to distribute the groceries.
The two settlements of Oruchinga and Nakivale have not had food distributed for the last two months sending the refugees onto near food riots.
The deputy settlement commandant, Johnson Okot says the biggest challenge is to make sure that food arrives on time so as not to face food riots which they normally experience in the months of September –November.
The newly appointed World Food Programme country Director, Sory Ouane confirmed meeting challenges in food distribution due to the global economic crisis. However, Ouane assured the refugees that they have enough food and would speed up the delivery.
He says as a lead food providing agency, WFP are working with other development partners like UNHCR, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), German International Cooperation (GIZ) and the government of Uganda to see that the situation is under control.
The two camps are homes to 53,000 refugees and 1,000 asylum seekers currently at the reception centre waiting for clearance.
Most of the refugees are from Rwanda and DR Congo, Somalia, Burundi and Eritrea.
