The police in Lyantonde district are holding a medical doctor following the death of a female patient under his care.

Dr. Gerald Kamutera Mubangizi from Lyantonde Hospital allegedly neglected the woman after she had given birth to a baby boy last week.

The woman identified as Joan Nuwagaba Kabaana died in the theater shortly after an operation due to excessive bleeding.

Mariam Biira, the OC CID Lyantonde Police confirmed Kamutera’s arrest. She says the doctor was very negligent during the course of the woman’s operation.

Biira says Kamutera proceeded to operate on Kabaana without the necessary medical tool kit to help in stitching her after removing the baby.

According to Biira, Dr. Kamutera abandoned the new mother in the theater without stitching her wounds causing over bleeding which led to her death.

Noah Serunjogi, the Southern Region police spokesman says Kabaana, a resident of Rwembogo village in Lwakayita Sub County in Kiruhura District was admitted at the Hospital where she had gone to give birth under Kamutera’s attention.

Serunjogi says the baby survived but the mother passed away due to over bleeding.

He adds that Kabaana’s relatives later reported the matter to police which responded by arresting Dr. Kamutera for investigations.

However, Kamutera denied the allegations of negligence. He claims that he tried to help her give birth but lack of delivery kits affected the operation procedures.
