News
Ambassador Joy Ogwu of Nigeria, which is presiding over the Council, told reporters on Tuesday that one of the debates will be on reforming the security sector in countries emerging from conflict or going through political change and the other will be on the Middle East.

The ‘critical role’ that women play in preventing conflicts will be among the three main issues that the Security Council is expected to debate this month.

Ambassador Joy Ogwu of Nigeria, which is presiding over the Council, told reporters on Tuesday that one of the debates will be on reforming the security sector in countries emerging from conflict or going through political change and the other will be on the Middle East.

Ambassador Ogwu explained that the debate is intended to highlight the critical role and participation of women in conflict prevention all over the world and this role has remained largely either unacknowledged or undocumented.

She said that she hopes a study will emerge from this so that the role of women in mediation will be documented as a basis or a framework for future policy.
