Over 2000 Sugarcane out growers in Mayuge district are pushing for a pay increase for a kilogram of sugarcane and the issuance of delivery notes, on delivery of the cane at the Mayuge sugar factory.
According to Wilson Dhabalamu, the Chairman Mayuge sugarcane out growers, when they deliver sugarcane at the factory they are not given any receipts to show the tons of the cane and when their payments would be made.
He says that the 74 shillings paid per kilogram is not enough for the out growers to profit from it. He says the out growers demand for Shillings 200/= per kilogram of the cane.
\\\\ Cue in “sugarcane can’t buy…”
Cue out “…to be issued immediately.”//
Dhabalamu says the workers have given Mayuge sugarcane factory one week to comply with their demands.
Patrick Bampalana, one of the Mayuge Sugarcane Growers Association members, says he has a choice to move and supply the cane to another company if Mayuge Sugarcane Company is frustrating him.
However, Kamulesh Bhai, the Director Mayuge sugar says the demands from the out growers have been handled in the past one year, the price of sugarcane per kilogram was increased by more than 40% from Shillings 45/= to 74/= and the demand notes for payment are issued after sugarcane has been weighed.
He adds that the management however is looking into how better they can work harmoniously with the out growers and other staff at Mayuge sugar factory.
