Internal Affairs minister Hilary Onek has spoken out on the allegations that he took bribes during the signing of the now controversial oil agreements.
Onek, who was then energy minister, says he supports the investigations into the allegations and if found guilty he should be punished. Amidst booing from other MPs Onek told the house that he needs the truth to come out.
Parliament is holding a special session to debate the oil sector, following a petition by MPs asking the speaker to recall the house from its recess.
Onek says the allegations came out last year that he received money on his foreign account.
He told MPs that the person from whom he received a call had began blackmailing him forcing him to take a step to go to Interpol where he reported the matter. On August 16th the minister says he recorded a statement with the director of CID asking him to investigate the account and the person blackmailing him. Onek says Brian Clover, an official from Tullow Oil was allegedly the person who credited the money to Onek’s account.
Onek says he has phone records showing who was trying to black mail him yet he has been on record stating that the oil companies must pay tax.
