At least one middle-aged man was reportedly shot dead in Nebbi town following clashes between police and supporters of Ezrom William Alenyo, whose swearing in as Nebbi district chairman was again put off.
The Monday afternoon incident took place near the district offices, the White House.
One other woman whose names have could not be readily established is said to have collapsed and was rushed to Nebbi hospital.
Business is said to be returning to normal after clashes forced people to desert the town.
Alenyo was set to be sworn in after a high court ruling on September 27th reinstated him as the winner of the 2011 elections. Robert Okumu, who had also been declared winner, petitioned the court of appeal seeking to block Alenyo’s swearing in, but court also threw out the petition on Friday last week.
The chief administrative officer, Serephin Alia ran announcements on local radio stations that Alenyo would be sworn in on Monday but on Sunday evening, a letter reportedly from the court of appeal blocked the ceremony again. The CAO could not be reached for a comment.
Alenyo’s supporters converged at the district head quarters and began destroying windows and computers in the education department, forcing police to confront them. Alex Wabwire, the district police commander declined to comment on the issue, noting that he would issue a statement later in the day.
