There is still heavy police deployment around Dr Kizza Besigye’s home in Kasangati after the Forum for Democratic Change leader was blocked from walking to work.
A Uganda Radio Network reporter in Kasangati says at least five police vehicles are packed near or around Besigye’s home. The politician was blocked from walking to the city on Tuesday morning prompting him to use a footpath through the southern end of his farm.
When he reached at a place called Masooli, a police pick up vehicle number UP 2958 intercepted him. Besigye was then bundled onto a police mini bus number UP 1928 as police instructed journalists to go away or face arrest.
Moments after the arrest, a United Nations vehicle registration number CD 12201U came and a white lady came out and started walking towards where Besigye was. But the police mini bus drove off at high speed and dropped Besigye at his home gate. The occupant of the UN car was later identified as Sarah Toner, a human rights officer from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Kawempe district police commander, Stephen Tanui later told Besigye that he is under defensive arrest, a departure from earlier police comments that the politician was under preventive arrest.
But Besigye addressed the press and insisted that he should be charged if he has committed any crime. He accused police of abusing their powers and following unlawful orders.
Besigye is now locked up in a meeting with some party officials and his lawyer, David Mpanga.
The walk to work campaign was relaunched on Monday after five months of silence.
