Arua Market Vendors: Compesate us Mr President

Local government
Several market stalls, drug shops, stationery shops and the market offices worth 100 million shillings were reduced to ash by the fire.

Vendors in Arua market have petitioned the president demanding compensation for the properties they lost when the market was gutted by fire in September 2010.

Several market stalls, drug shops, stationery shops and the market offices worth 100 million shillings were reduced to ash by the fire.

The district has not lived up to its promise to help the vendors and with frustration building up, the vendors are looking up to the president for compensation.

Nelson Dada, the Arua market vendor’s association chairman says the ministry of disaster preparedness has done nothing despite the promises made.

The petition has been supported by Arua district LC 5 chairman Wadri Sam Nyakua, who says the vendors have a right to be supported. He promised to make a follow up on the demands for compensation.

But the third deputy Prime minister Gen. Moses Ali, who received the petition on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni says the compensation for the market vendors in Arua has delayed due to the failure by police to submit a report about their investigations to the central government.

Moses Ali says compensation will only be based on conclusive evidence to prove that the fire was accidental.
