Forum for Democratic Change party youths from Makerere University on Monday visited Dr Kiiza Besigye at his home in Kasangati, where he is under a week long house arrest.
The students went to Kasangati in what they called solidarity visit. Besigye told the students to stand firm and that what is happening in the country is expected in any dictatorship. He noted that asking for freedom cannot be treason.
Led by the deputy guild president Doreen Nyanjura, the students carried buckets and baby potties which they donated to policemen. Last week, Besigye complained that the policemen, who were deployed to block him from walking, were easing themselves in his compound and farm.
The students also carried placards some of which read “Release Besigye Now, Freedom to Move is My Right, Police Pupu is Smelling among others.
There is still heavy police presence around FDC leader Kiiza Besigye’s home, a day after they were reported to have withdrawn their forces.
ASP Sam Omala from Kampala Metropolitan North, who is commanding the police contingent at Besigye’s home, says they did not withdraw from Kasangati as was reported. He told URN on Monday that they had only gone to change clothes and that they are determined to stay at Besigye’s home until police are convinced that the FDC leader will no longer walk to work.
A URN reporter in Kasangati says at least four police pick up trucks are stationed just in front of Besigye’s gate and about 30 policemen are patrolling the area. There are unconfirmed reports that police chief, Major General Kale Kayihura secretly visited the Besigye’s home on Sunday night and talked to police officers, but these claims have been dismissed by Omala as untrue.
Omala described the students’ action as an insult to police.
