Uganda’s top badminton player Edwin Ekiring says he is targeting to be among the world’s top 100 ranked players to be able to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

Ekiring, who won silver at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, told URN reporter online this morning that although it’s difficult to get the necessary points for the Olympics, he will keep trying hard to qualify for another Olympics after Beijing in 2008.

In 2008, Ekiring failed to amass enough points to qualify for the Olympics, but earned the right to take part in the prestigious Games after his impressive performances on the international circuit which made the World Badminton body to give him a wild card together with Zambia’s Elly Mambwe.

No African player is yet to attain the points to make it to the world’s top 100 male players for the singles, although South Africa’s Jacob Malieka is ranked 119 and Ekiring is placed four places behind him. Ekiring will be trying his luck in the Norwegian International Championship which takes place from November 17-20 in Oslo, Norway.
