Uganda Athletics Federation and MTN Uganda have announced that they will invite top world runners for this year's MTN Kampala Marathon which takes place on November 27.
The 2011 MTN Kampala Marathon will be graced by top world runners, organizers Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) have said.
During the launch of the event on Thursday at the Serena Hotel in Kampala, the UAF President Dominic Otuchet said they are inviting the world’s top cream to grace the event and they will be paid appearance fees.
The event that takes place on November 27 will have three categories, the 10km, 42km and the 52km with cash prizes and trophies at stake for the best performers. The MTN Kampala Marathon is also the biggest event on the Ugandan sports calendar and also largely competes with other marathons around the world.
In the past eight years the sponsors MTN Uganda have partnered with Uganda Red Cross so that proceeds from the event are spread out to the people in need around Uganda. Last year the event attracted over 20,000 runners and Shs 230 million was collected.
Themba Khumalo, the MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer called upon many Ugandans to register for the event which will have the theme: "What’s your reason to run?" The event is also listed on the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) circuit.
MTN’s Chief marketing Officer, Isaac Nsereko said registration for the 2011 MTN Kampala Marathon will start on November 14 to 25 so that the runners have enough time to also pick their running vests and timing chips from the organizers.
