Former vice president Prof Gilbert Bukenya on Monday joined his supporters in Kakiri town, Wakiso to celebrate the withdrawal of the abuse of office charges against him.
This follows a decision by the Inspector General of Government Raphael Baku last wekk to drop the case before the Anti Corruption Court. Bukenya has been facing charges of abuse of office and forgery in respect to his role in the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) procurement.
The Anti-Corruption Court Justice Catherine Bamugemereire on Monday formally cleared Bukenya of abuse of office charges.
From court, Bukenya headed to Kakiri in his Busiro North constituency where he campaigning for re-election as area Member of Parliament, after his earlier victory was nullified by the High court over election irregularities.
A URN reporter in the area says crowds of people gathered in Kakiri town council blowing Vuvuzelas and carrying Uganda flags. Kamuli Nganda, a resident of Bukalango said he is happy that the government has cleared Bukenya adding that the former VP’s work should be appreciated.
But Kalifan Katende, a resident of Namutumba Sub County was not happy with the withdrawal of the case, noting that the country has lost lots of money and that Bukenya should face the law.
At a rally held at Kakiri Taxi Park Professor Bukenya criticized people fighting him saying that the country won’t develop with such people.
He thanked the people of Busiro North for being by his side during the hard times.
Bukenya noted that no one can bribe God and time has come for every body to understand that his work was great despite some people being against him.
