Court Magistrate in Spotlight for Corruption

The grade one magistrate malaba court is in the spotlight for his alleged involvement in the extortion of money from plainants.

A group of angry residents of Malaba town council have accused the Derrick Byamugisha, of being absent from duty, drunkenness and extortion of money from the public.

Speaking before the judiciary integrity committee headed by Justice Akiiki Kiiza at Tororo chief magistrate’s court on Monday, some residents complained that the regular absenteeism of the magistrate has sparked a loss of trust in the judiciary.

The committee that was attended by the Mbale resident Judge justice Stephen Musota, was monitoring the judicial integrity system through complaints from the public.

However the accused magistrate did not attend the meeting because he is reportedly admitted in Mulago hospital following his involvement in a road accident on Saturday.

The residents also complained of regular loss of files, cases taking too long before being heard or disposed off and appeals in the high court take too long for files to be allocated for hearing.

Justice Akiiki thanked the residents for their openness and said that the meeting will assist them come up with appropriate measures to address the problems in the judicial system.
