Flash Floods Kill Two in Lwengo

Bazonoona says the floods have washed away the bridges connecting to these roads making transportation of goods and services and passengers difficult. He says the flash floods have removed all the culverts which had just been installed along Mbilizi-Musubiro road and pushed them aside.
Two people have been killed by flash floods in Lwengo district that has also left a trail of destruction. The deceased are 8-year old Talibi Kayanza of Kyasenya village and another an elder man only identified as Kitto. Moses Kilyampasa, the father to the 8-year-old flash flood victim says that his son was washed away by floods from Kabawangala Dam as a result of a huge storm.


Kilyampasa explains that the minor was playing with a jerrican when the floods swept him into a huge ditch where his body was found. The floods also killed Kitto, who is believed to have been drunk as he was found with a tot pack of Waragi. Lubega Bazonoona, Lwengo sub county LC3 Chairman says the floods also destroyed several bridges cutting off five major roads in the area.
 

Some of the affected roads are Mbilizi-Musuburo road, Kyetume-Lwetamu Road, Musuburo-Kwinzi road connecting to Sembabule district. Other cut off roads include Kinoni – Buziinga Road and Nakyenyi Kawoko community road. Bazonoona says that transport to and outside his electoral area has become difficult because of the heavy destruction.


He explains that the flash floods also destroyed culverts that were recently installed along Mbilizi-Musubiro road. Gertrude Nakabira, Lwengo District Woman Member of Parliament says the heavy rains also destroyed crop gardens in Kiseka Sub County.

George Mutabaazi, Lwengo LC5 Chairman says the district is worried on where to get funds to fix the destroyed roads. Mutabaazi appeals to the Ministry of Work and Transport to intervene and fix the destroyed roads to ease transport.
 

According to Mutabaazi, the district has also launched tree planting campaign to minimize damage in future.
