Sergeant James Ayena, the Lira district police chief has been arrested for alleged neglect of duty.

Ayena, a police officer in charge Ocamonyang police Outpost in Agali Sub County was arrested on Wednesday morning shortly after he turned up at Lira Central Police station to explain why he went off duty without clearance.

The district police commander, Robert Semmata, says the chief’s troubles come a day after three guns were reportedly stolen from the outpost in his absence.

DPC Semmata said Ayena failed to convince him as to why he went off duty without clearance from his boss.

On Tuesday, Henry Alyanga, the Central North police spokesman, said three police officers and two others were being held in connection with the disappearance of guns.

Bonny Okello, Jackson Ogwal, David Letu, are jointly charged with Opeto Nelson and Moses Ogwang a former Amuka fighter and ex-crime prevention officer for the alleged theft of the guns.

He said the suspects are being held at Lira Central Police station to help with investigations.

Alyanga said the guns went missing from the outpost.

RDC Susan Akany on Tuesday led a joint team of investigators to Agali Sub County to establish the circumstances under which the rifles went missing.

Residents accused the police of hiring out their guns to unscrupulous individuals to terrorize the residents.
