The Electoral commission in Luweero has accepted the petition filled by National Resistance Movement candidate and the party seeking a vote recount in the Monday by election for the Woman Member of parliament seat.
Rebecca Nalwanga who lost to Democratic Party candidate Brenda Nabukenya by 30 votes petitioned the electoral commissionon Tuesday seeking a vote recount on grounds that the tally center was fraught with several irregularities Nabukenya polled 14,945 votes against Nalwanga's 14,915 votes.
Nalwanga has rejected the results and says she was shocked to be declared a loser.She accused the Electoral commission officials of conniving with Nabukenya to rob her of her victory.
Peter Kasozi the district returning officer says that the commission has agreed to recount the votes on Thursday November 24th at 9 Am.
Kasozi explains that the right for an agent or candidate to seek for vote recount is enshrined in section 54 of the parliamentary election act of 2005 and it stipulates that where the votes that separates the two competing candidates are less than fifty then a mandatory vote recount can be done by the commission.
Kasozi adds that all candidates have been notified to turn up at the district headquarters on Thursday to witness the vote recount and the results.
Brenda Nabukenya says that she can’t accept a vote recount because National Resistance Movement party officials to rob her of her victory.
Nabukenya says that she has hired a team of lawyers to seek for a court injunction.
Tension remains high in Luweero town council and anti-riot policemen have been stationed at Electoral commission offices to block irate DP supporters from attacking it.
The seat for Luweero Member of Parliament fell vacant on 23rd September this year when Justice Benjamin Kabiito found Nalwanga guilty of voter bribery and ordered fresh polls.
