Fourteen people are in police custody in Kamwenge district have for alleged murder and participating in mob justice.
The suspects are purported to have participated in the murder of Deus Tumuhimbise in his 30s, a resident of Kakinga zone in Kamwenge sub county Kamwenge district whom they accused him of theft.
Bakari Muga Bashir, the Western Uganda police publicist identified some of the suspects as Fidah Nalongo, Wilson Author Ahulire and Peter Fituma of the same area.
Bakari says that the trio and eleven others, whose identities could not be given for fear of jeopardizing with investigations, mobilized the residents and lynched Tumuhimbise on Wednesday on allegations of stealing a weighing machine belonging to Nalongo.
It’s alleged that Tumuhimbise stole a weighing machine on Wednesday evening and disappeared with it.
Nalongo, the owner of the machine mobilized residents and mounted a search and they met Tumuhimbise on the way allegedly carrying the stolen machine at around 8:00pm.
Armed with clubs, stones and bricks the irate mob arrested him and beat to death.
Bakari says the police rushed to the scene and arrested Nalongo, Wilson Author Ahulire and Peter Fituma and detained them at Kamwenge police station.
On hearing their arrest, the residents numbering about 60 stormed the police station demanding their release. They complained that they were tired of the increasing cases of robbery in the area.
Bakari says out of the 60 residents, 11 were arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Tumuhimbise while 33 others were arrested for unlawful assembly at the police station.
The police boss says that when investigations are complete, the suspects will be taken to court and be charged accordingly.
Bakari warns the general public against putting the laws in their hands adding that the law will catch up them.
