Work on the Nusaf II sub-project at Waka Primary school in Moyo district has been halted after the workers laid down their tools over non-payment of their money by the contractor.
The workers, according to the contractor, Quintino Okwong, are demanding for 4 million shillings which has not been paid in the past two months.
But one of the aggrieved laborers, Longa Swahli, accused the contractor of disappearing with their money.
Quintino told Uganda Radio Network on Thursday that he used the 9 million shillings to pay the debt of materials used during construction of the house that is expected to accommodate teachers in the school.
The local council III chairman of Itula sub-county, Ali Lomure, urged the casual laborers not to halt the roofing process, asking them to handle the matter on mutual agreement.
Geoffrey Vuciri, the Moyo district NUSAF 2 technical officer says in total the district has received funding for 62 community projects worth 732 million shillings out of expected 900 million for the first batch. He says many of the projects have not been completed because of similar complaints of non-payment by the local contractors because it is the community to procure their own contractors.
Nusaf 2 is a 100 million dollar project funded by the World Bank to help communities in northern Uganda to recover from the effects of the war and fight poverty. Ends
