Voting is underway in the Busiro North Parliamentary by election where former vice president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya is facing three other contenders for the seat.
A Uganda Radio Network reporter in the area says voting started as early as 7:30am. By 9:00am voting was going on normally at Kasudde polling station in Masuliita and at Nakyerongoosa primary school, Namubiru primary school and Nampunge primary school polling stations all in Kakiri Sub County.
At Nampunge polling station, the electoral commission chairman, Dr. Badru Kiggundu was seen moving around in what he described as monitoring of the exercise. He told URN that materials were delivered at all the polling stations on time. The presiding officer Stanly Ssozi said up to 50 people had already voted by 10:00am. Democratic Party’s Hussein Kasta Bukenya is expected to vote at Nampunge polling station at 10:30am.
Professor Bukenya, who is standing on the ruling NRM ticket, cast his ballot at 9:00am at Rwantama-Naguru catholic parish polling station, though earlier reports had indicated that the former vice president would vote at 10:00am.
The race also has two independent candidates, Henry Kiwuwa and Teopista Kanzara Baliruno.
Up to five police personnel are seen at each of the polling stations.
