At least 1,200 residents of Namalu Sub County in Nakapiripirit district are hit by food shortage following the current floods that have hit the area.

Theodora Ngorok, the area LC3 councilor said on Wednesday that most families lost food that had just been harvested and stored in the granaries.

Ngorok noted that children and their mothers are the worst hit in these areas.

He said that majority of them do not have what to eat, while others are sleeping in the cold since they do not have what to cover themselves with.

He said the worst hit areas are Nakuluny, Aoyolira, Lokoreto, and Lopedot villages.

Others are Lokitela, Alokwa, Apechoret and Lokitela ekoriot villages in Loperot parish and Lokatapan parishes respectively.

Ngorok added that his area is facing severe food shortage after the floods swept unspecified acres of food gardens.

He said several families in the Okudud, the worst hit village are reportedly surviving on porridge and foraging leaves.

Babra Oundo Nekesa, the State Minister for Karamoja affairs has appealed to the residents to be calm.

At a meeting in Namalu trading centre, Nekesa asked the residents to avoiding settling in areas that are prone to floods.

She added that the disaster ministry would soon deliver items that could help them recover from the hazard.

Nekesa asked the residents to dig trenches to ease the flow of water to the nearby river to reduce moist conditions in their sleeping houses that could contribute to diseases.
