The officer in charge of Kasana police post in Luweero town council is in trouble for allegedly receiving a bribe of  600,000 shillings to drop charges against two suspected cattle thieves.

Assistant Inspector of Police Polly Kawagga was arrested on Monday and is now detained at Luweero police station for allegedly releasing two suspected cattle thieves identified as Moses Nsubuga and John Ssebugulu. Nsubuga is a resident of Bombo town council while Ssebugulu hails from Kamira Sub County.

Trouble for Kawagga started when residents of Mazzi in Kamira Sub County where the cattle were reportedly stolen, protested the release and petitioned the Resident District Commissioner Paul Lubowa demanding for immediate re-arrest and investigations of the two suspects.

RDC Lubowa ordered the arrest of the two suspects and they revealed to police that they paid up to 600,000 shillings to Kawagga to secure their release. Kawagga was immediately picked from the police post and is currently detained at Luweero Central police station.

The Luweero District police commander, Samuel Bamuzibire confirmed the arrest and said that the police officer is facing charges of soliciting a bribe.

But Kawagga has denied the charges describing them as blackmail and attempts to fail him on the job.

This is the fifth police officer in Luweero to be arrested in the period of two months over. Two police officers Gordon Kakumba attached at Zirobwe police station and Praise Ahimbisibwe of Kabunyata police post are facing murder charges whereas Venasuis Nteyaffa faces neglect of duty. The officer in charge of Kalule police post Jerome Aisu  is also battling with charges of indecent assault and threatening violence.
