Floods Cut Off Mbarara-Isingiro Road

News
Flash floods triggered heavy rains have submerged the main road that connects Mbarara, Isingiro and Ntungamo districts.
Flash floods triggered heavy rains have submerged the main road that connects Mbarara, Isingiro and Ntungamo districts.

The floods also washed away two bridges that connect feeder roads in Kabingo town council. Inkole Stephen, a resident of Kabingo II says floods have washed Hamudimo and Haribiri bridges that connect Kabingo town council to the two other sub counties.

Inkole says the whole of Wednesday people did not carry out any activities for fear of losing their lives while attempting to cross the flooded areas.

The heavy down pour that lasted for the whole day on Tuesday left roads, structures, farms and crop gardens submerged.

Over 40 trucks mostly loaded with Matooke from different sub counties of Isingiro district heading to central region and Southern Sudan spent Wednesday night stuck in Kabingo town council after failing to go through the flooded Mbarara -Isingiro road.

Moses Makumbi, a truck driver says he is worried that if the situation remains the way it is the matooke will rot before he gets to Southern Sudan.

Makumbi says he always takes four days to reach Juba but now he had so far spent two nights in Isingiro district.

The Isingiro district chairman Ignatius Byaruhanga appealed for help from Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to provide graders to open up blocked culverts along the Mbarara-Isingiro road to allow easy flow of flooded water coming from nearby bare hills.

In the 2011/2012 financial, year government earmarked 120 billion shillings to have Mbarara -Isingiro Kikagati road graded but the project has delayed commence.

Asaph Abenitwe, the UNRA station engineer Mbarara area says he had asked workers of the China Community Company, a firm contracted to tarmac the said road, to help open up the blocked culverts.

He blamed the district leaders for not stopping people from carrying out human activities on bare hills which affect maintenance of the roads in the area.
