Sacked Uganda People’s Congress Secretary General and head of the mobilization task force have vowed to continue working for the party.
UPC Party President Olara Otunnu on Monday fired Secretary General John Odit and chief mobiliser David Pulkol following a disagreement over donor funds.
The sacked officials supported by the party National Chairman Maj. Edward Rurangaranga, say they have been on a mobilization programme for the last three weeks starting in Lango sub region and will continue with it.
Odit, who strongly condemned Otunnu’s move to fire them, says the programme will continue uninterrupted until they present a report to the UPC National Council.
They have also given notice to members of the national council that the status quo is maintained until the next meeting. The National council was to meet in February next year but due to the ongoing party crisis the national chairman has called for it to be brought forward to January 2012.
Maj. Rurangaranga stresses that it was wrong for Otunnu to fire the two officials after only the council of elders was consulted. He argues that both the youth and women must have been consulted, but Otunnu has ignored proposals to set up party leagues for the two groups.
Efforts to get a comment from Otunnu have been futile. But when URN contacted the party offices today, the secretary only identified as Aisha said Otunnu was locked up in a cabinet meeting and she was not sure what time it would end.
Sources tell URN that in an abrupt move on Monday, Otunnu announced that he was going to reshuffle his party officials, though there was no news of immediate replacements. He accused Pulkol and Odit of working against him and being National Resistance Movement informers.
