David Bahati, Deputy NRM chief whip says that they are in the process of blacklisting party members accused of their involvement in corruption. He says that the implicated members will not be allowed to contest in the party structures and also vie as party candidates in any election. Speaking at a consultative meeting with his electorates at Butanda Sub County, Bahati said the decision is aimed at wedding the country of corruption.
His pronouncement comes at a time when several top NRM officials are facing allegations of corruption. They include NRM secretary general Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, John Nasasira, NRM chief whip, Sam Kutesa and Mwesigwa Rukutana. Recently, Kabakumba Masiko, Bujenje county MP was forced to resign her ministerial posts for illegally acquiring a Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Mast and radio transmitter.
According to Bahati the corruption allegations labeled against top NRM ministers is tarnishing the image of the party. Bahati urged his electorate to join the war against corruption and stop glorifying public officials who amass wealth through dubious means. In his 2011 election campaigns President Yoweri Museveni pledged zero tolerance to corruption. Despite this anti corruption activists have accused the president of taking a soft stand and shielding his officials caught in corruption scandals.
