Wilson Tukire has claimed the top spot in the National badminton ranking. Tukire shot to the top after winning nine games at Kampala club in Nakasero on Monday night. Brian Ssuna came second after registered a loss to Tukire. The Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) arranged the national ranking event to pick a team that will represent Uganda in the Thomas and Uber Cup event which will be hosted by Ethiopia in February 2012.
Simon Mugabi, UBA executive director explains that that it was only fair to have all the ten best players across the country to play on a round robin basis so that they can be ranked and select a team that will represent the country in the International sanctioned Cup. He says that they also have the women’s rankings event Wednesday. Mugabi told URN that the Badminton World Federation has also relocated the games to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from Egypt because of political instability. Mugabi explains that they want to field a strong team.
He says that Holland based professional player Edwin Ekiring will join the team. The other two players who made the men’s team include Daniel Mihigo and Rogers Bakaki. Nigeria and South Africa are the men and women’s defending champions respectively. Mugabi said after the event in Addis Ababa, the winning teams will represent the continent at the World Thomas and Uber Cup to take place in May in China.
