The People’s Progressive Party [PPP] is to use the New Year to identify leaders to take over the party leadership. PPP was started by Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, a long time local government minister after he was dropped from cabinet for opposing the lifting of presidential term limits from the constitution. However, PPP says that they what to use 2012 to rid the party of individualism, which has dodged the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM.
Sadam Gayiira, spokesman PPP says despite the fact that Bidandi Ssali’s leadership qualities are not in question they are determined to group other people to steer the party. He says that this will help the party eliminate the danger of people thinking it belongs to Bidandi Ssali as an individual.

He says that in 2012 PPP will intensify its efforts to build party structures right from the grassroots. After the general elections the party embarked on holding regional sensitization workshops in Masaka, Hoima, Koboko, Soroti, Busoga and Kampala districts.
Gayiira reveals that for each area that has more than 20 registered party members, a branch is formed and a leader is elected who will then be part of the third delegates’ conference to be held in 2013.

In the 2011 general elections PPP got four councilors in Pader, One in Buikwe and an LC3 chairman in Koboko districts. The party is now consolidating support in all areas it fielded candidates.
The party will next year also fill in positions of top executives who have left the country and work together with international development partners to build capacity. These include holding workshops with deepening democracy programme and the Frederick Elbert Stiftung who are funding the party.
