Police Stuck with Criminal Suspects

Crime
Frank Ntankovu, the criminal investigations officer said Tuesday the cells at Masaka Central
Police Station are congested as the numbers of criminal suspects’ surges.

Police in Masaka are stuck with more than 40 criminal suspects, because the courts are still

closed for the Christmas break.

Frank Ntankovu, the criminal investigations officer said Tuesday the cells at Masaka Central

Police Station are congested as the numbers of criminal suspects’ surges.

Majority of the criminals are being held for charges ranging from theft of vehicles, house

breaking, defilement and assault.

With the courts still closed for legal business, the criminal investigations department has been

compelled to grant police bond to five suspects with minor offences like assault and theft.

The chief detective officer says the magistrate’s courts were closed on 23rd December last

year. He said the closure of the courts has plunged the police into a difficult situation because

the criminal suspects are being held beyond the constitutional 48 hour- period.

The Resident State Attorney, Moses Onencan, says the courts will resume work on January 4th.
