The Luweero Resident District Commissioner Paul Lubowa has failed to reconcile the two rival Muslim sects who are feuding over rights to slaughter animals.
The renewed wrangles started during the festive season when the faction allied to Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, the Kibuli based Mufti and that of Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, the Mufti of Uganda clashed in Zirobwe and Kikyusa sub counties over who should slaughter animals in the area.
The Mubajje faction also appointed Yasin Doka as district slaughter officer after firing Bruhan Ssentongo for paying allegiance to Zubair Kayongo. The Kayongo faction defied the suspension and all the two conflicting factions were banned from supervising the slaughter exercise by local councils until they resolved their grievances.
The two groups petitioned RDC Lubowa to reconcile them and decide on who should slaughter animals. On Thursday, the RDC met them in the district Lukiiko hall but the meeting ended with no decision.
Sheikh Yasin Doha told Lubowa that the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council is the only institution that has the mandate to oversee the slaughter of animals and birds in the country and it was empowered by ministries of agriculture and Health. He added that it also lawfully appointed him and is not willing to step down.
But Mugalu Kyobe from the rival faction told the RDC that whereas Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has the mandate to oversee the exercise, it had no authority to appoint slaughter officers at district level and its decision to fire Bruhan Ssentongo was unlawful and based on bias.
Lubowa failed to reconcile them and suspended the meeting. He later told URN Reporter that he will summon the National chairman of UMSC slaughter committee Abdunoor Nsamba to his office to explain circumstances under which slaughter officers are elected.
